My Story Town – Leeds, Alabama

My Story Town

LEEDS, ALABAMA

My Story Town

Once upon a time long, long ago in a place called Leeds, Alabama a library was set in the middle of town. For nearly one-hundred years, the library was a special place for the town’s people to visit. However, this is a story about the recent and intriguing routines of the library’s members. At exactly 10 o’clock on the second Tuesday of every month each of the town’s people quickly finish their breakfast.

They fasten colorful buttons on their shirt as they dress. They reach into their secret hide-a-way spot in search of their small green passport. Then, clinch the passports filled with stamps and stickers as they prepare to leave. The town’s children, excited with anticipation, want to jump around. However, they silently sit waiting and listen to the sounds of the adults getting ready. The children check to see if they placed their favorite buttons on their shirt and silently count them one-by-one. Finally, cars move into the streets of Leeds and begin forming lines that circle around and stop.

The children look out their windows and peak inside their passports. Whispering to themselves they say, “I can’t wait to see where we’ll explore today!”

People of all ages are invited to My Story Town. This is a program designed to inform and build community by using an exciting story time experience to meet and learn together about the pre-selected locations throughout The City of Leeds.

What is My Story Town?

The Leeds Jane Culbreth Library, Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce, and Leeds Redevelopment Authority have joined together to provide a new way to guide and inform residents about the past and present of The City of Leeds.

Through visits to historic buildings, businesses, and city municipalities, Every month, throughout the year, on the second Tuesday at 10:30am, the community is invited to gather at
selected locations. The launching of My StoryTown will be at the Leeds Jane Culbreth Library. In October the Leeds Fire Department will host, followed by a meeting at the Leeds
Historical Society in November.

My Story Town is partnering with Millennial Bank in Leeds for a Cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus event in December.

Through the generosity of the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce and the Leeds Redevelopment Authority, children will receive a passport to bring with them each month to collect a commemorative sticker and a matching button to wear from each My Story Town location.

To RSVP for any My Story Town event, please utilize the online registration form or call the library at 205.699.5962.

We look forward to seeing you at My Story Town!

Monday Lunchtime Movies

MONDAY LUNCHTIME MOVIES | During the month of September, we will spotlight the classics at Leeds Jane Culbreth Library – Bring your lunch and join us in the meeting room from 11am – 1pm to catch these classic films.

◦Monday, September 12, 2022— Casablanca – (1942). Easy to enter, but much harder to leave, especially if you’re wanted by the Nazis. Such a man is Resistance leader Victor Laszlo, whose only hope is Rick Blaine, a cynical American who sticks his neck out for no one – especially Victor’s wife Ilsa, the ex-lover who broke his heart. Ilsa offers herself in exchange for Laszlo’s transport out of the country and bitter Rick must decide what counts more – personal happiness or countless lives hanging in the balance.

◦Monday, September 19, 2022— Breakfast at Tiffanys – (1961). A young New York socialite becomes interested in a young man who has moved into her apartment building, but her past threatens to get in the way.

◦Monday, September 26, 2022— Citizen Kane (1941). It’s not easy living up to the title of “best film ever made,” but Orson Welles’ depiction of a mad publishing billionaire really did remake an industry. Welles pioneered filmmaking techniques of deep focus and chiaroscuro lighting. He was inspired by the life story of publishing scion William Randolph Hearst, but
you’ll have to watch it to see what exactly “Rosebud” means.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
